How I Said F You to Fear and Started Finding My Confidence: The 5 Second Rule Review

Full Disclosure: The Amazon link in this blog post is an affiliate link and any purchases made as a result of clicking that link may mean a small commission for me at no additional cost to you. Also I’m not that A hole who throws a ton of affiliate links out there hoping to make a buck. I actually like the stuff I recommend so THANK YOU, if you click and purchase.

Oh man I don’t even know where to start with all of this. I’ve posted about Monat before because I was that person to joined a direct sales company thinking I was going to make a few blog posts and things were just going to explode and I was going to be making all this money selling something that I absolutely 100% love, but that’s not exactly what happened. I didn’t really sell much of anything at all actually and I wasn’t confident in myself enough to even mention this company and it’s products to people I know and thought could benefit (which is basically everyone by the way).

What if I’m bugging them?

What if they don’t want to be my friend anymore because I shared this shampoo with them?

What if I feel like I’m not good enough to sell this to them?

What if they unfollow me?

What if I’m not qualified to sell it even though I’ve had results?

What if people literally just don’t care about my product?

The “what if” list can go on forever, but every single what if on that list was a what if produced from fear. In hindsight it was a pretty freaking stupid list.

Why was I holding myself back? Did I really believe all that stuff? I don’t see all the successful Market Partners living in fear and destructive what ifs.

What if I didn’t buy into all those what ifs? But then I still didn’t really know how to change my way of thinking.

I kept coming back to this idea of working the Monat business, selling these product that I know are truly revolutionary in the hair care industry. I’d kind of explore it a tiny bit, maybe post to my Instagram stories, but I definitely wasn’t taking it serious. Not totally anyway.

In one of these moments where I came back around to it, I decided to actually sit in on one of those zoom calls you hear about in direct sales. What would it hurt? It was one for new Market Partners or Market Partners like me that came in, didn’t do anything, and now want in on this opportunity. This upline talked for just a second about Mel Robbin’s five second rule and something about that intrigued me and I couldn’t let it stop there. In a nutshell the rule is counting down from 5 when negativity or fear keeps us from acting on an instinct that we know is right or this the thing that will push us forward and then when we get to one, we move our bodies in the direction of doing the thing before all that fear finds time to settle in our brains and keep us from doing it.

courage over fear.png

I googled it and came across Mel Robbins book called The 5 Second Rule and I decided what the hell, I’m just going to do this. The next day I stopped by my local Half Price Books. They were out of it. The employee offered to get it in for me, but it would take 10 days. I had a super vague idea of what the 5 second rule was and I thought, nope it’ll come and go before 10 days is up, so I drove a little further to Barnes and Noble and picked it up. Even my Amazon Prime 2 day free shipping wasn’t going to be fast enough for me on this one. It was now or never… or a lot later down the road anyway. I had to grab this moment before it was gone.

And to be honest, as much as I want to be at home with my kids, I’m tired of not pulling my weight financially in my family (not that I have to, but I want to), but I’m also really just not made for a traditional job. I know this opportunity can work. I know I can make as much and more than I made when I drove to a traditional job so why not put my head down and get after it.

Since starting and finishing The 5 Second Rule (technically I finished it yesterday), I’ve used the rule to quiet my negativity and push through moments of fear in order to share this thing I love with the people around me. It’s a little early to say if I’m going to be super successful in the business, but the point is that this rule has allowed me to get out of my own way and make progress towards a goal instead of just dreaming about it. I’ve made more sales in the last week than I did in the entire year and half prior. Even if it doesn’t add up to much, I’m pretty freaking proud of that. And you know what? So far only 3 of the people I’ve reached out to have ignored me and it turns out I’m actually okay with that. To me that says more about where they are with things and less about where I am with things. I’ve heard no, gotten some excuses, but more than anything people have been kind and received it well, even if now is not the time. I’m slowly working through the fear, but my confidence is already better than it was a couple weeks ago.

If fear and a lack of self confidence is holding you back from something you want personally or professionally, I’m recommending this book to you. It’s not like all those other personal development books you read. Have you ever noticed most of them are inspiration, but with no clear way to actually get out of your own way? It doesn’t make them bad by any means. I love some of those books and the message they send. The thing about The 5 Second Rule is that Mel gives you an actionable thing to do to change your behavior and that, my friend, is key.

So, if you do want to pick up this book from Amazon, I’d click the Buy on Amazon button over there and add it to your cart. Ready?

5… 4… 3… 2... 1... and go click it.

You see what I did there?

As Seen in Issue 11 of the Magnolia Journal

IMG_2017.JPG

Issue No. 11 of the Magnolia Journal surrounds the idea of Freedom and inspires you to celebrate freedom in a number of ways. Maybe you celebrate freedom by choosing a path for you instead of what was expected, maybe it’s letting go of comforts to allow room for growth, maybe it’s packing out your kids into the car and living life on the road, or maybe it’s simply running through the grass barefoot on a summer day with literally nothing else to do. There’s even a summer bucket list that will inspire you to make this the best summer ever and live like you’re a kid again. If this sounds like your jam or you just want some of the grilled flatbread recipes (because they look freaking delicious and easy to make), go get it. If you just want to find a few Joanna Gaines approved items you can buy online, well then, I can help you with that. Just keep scrolling.

Backpack by Walker Family Goods

There’s an entire article about the Walker Family in this issue. They sound kind of amazing and I want to be them for like a week (likely I’d change my mind after 1 day in the car with my kids). Plus I’m just loving the vintage vibe of this bag.

Chemical Free Sunscreen

Look, I use the bad stuff on my kids too because it works. I’m trying to do better though and this one caught my eye.

Coconut Milk Roll On Perfume

There’s a seaweed + sea salt one I really want to try. I haven’t used perfume in years, but this makes me want to try.

But seriously, this issue has me saying all the yeses and I’m really anxious to try the spinach + artichoke flatbread and the tomato + basil flatbread. There’s even a recipe for chimichurri with avocado that sounds amazing too and since our outdoor kitchen is finally up and running, you can bet we might just be trying that one very soon with whatever steak I can get Tyler to cook. I don’t grill so if you know what an appropriate cut of mean for a chimichurri is, feel free to share.

So yeah, if you’re asking my opinion, I’d totally recommend issue no. 11 of the Magnolia Journal.

Parabo Press For The Win + Free Square Prints + $10 Off

parabo-6542.jpg

I don’t have quite as much control over things when it comes to Saida anymore. She has her own style, her own likes, wants to decorate her room according to her own taste, and all that good business. I’m hanging on to as much control as I can, but I’m also kind of a believer in letting her explore and letting her take charge of some of those things within reason.

Putting up these super cute (AND FREE because we got the smaller ones which are always free) square prints from Parabo Press is a fun way for me to let her make her own decisions while winning the battle over her room decor. She got to pick each photo she wanted to display. Nevermind that we’re still wearing Christmas pajamas with unbrushed hair (and it’s the afternoon). Scroll down for a coupon code at the bottom of this post for $10 off your first order from Parabo Press. Or if you’d rather, just order the free prints and just pay shipping. Such a fun way to have your kids interact with photographs.

Postpartum Hair Loss and Monat

Postpartum hair loss is a real thing.

It takes a little bit (like 3 months ish), but eventually those hormones hit this point where it’s like “you didn’t need that hair, did you?” and it just starts coming out in what seems like chunks. My whole back side would be covered in hair in the shower and then there is that weird grow out phase where you just feel like your hair looks ridiculous all the time.

IMG_9757.JPG

And apparently it doesn’t all come back on it’s own either.

I didn’t realize this until I started using Monat and here we are one year later and my widows peak is finally filling in with hair I forgot I used to have.

My youngest will be three in just a few months. This round of new growth or regrowth is 100% made possible by Monat.

But you’ve heard Monat causes hair loss, right? All I can say to that is that mine is growing and filling in and is healthier, stronger, and shinier than it’s ever been and I’d absolutely recommend it to anyone and especially new moms battling that postpartum hair loss.

Which products are right for you?

Disclaimer: I’m not a hair professional. I’m just a girl who loves her hair and the real results I’ve seen in my own hair since starting Monat.

101 Uses for Monat's Rejuveniqe Oil (Including Mosquito Bites)

Screen Shot 2018-10-12 at 12.52.37 PM.png

If you’ve spent any time in Texas lately, you’ve probably been bit by a mosquito or two or twelve. Like everything else, they’re bigger in Texas and I have an ankle that’s sporting about 4 mosquito bites currently. It’s agonizing. I couldn’t sleep because nothing and I mean NOTHING stops the itching.

I’d finally had enough the other day and decided to give my Rejuveniqe Oil by Monat a try. Worst case scenario it doesn’t work and my ankle is at least thoroughly moisturized. I put a few drops in my hand, spent about 30 seconds rubbing it into my ankle and…… INSTANT ITCH RELIEF!!!!! Hallelujah!!! And it lasted. It wasn’t just relief for a couple minutes. I literally didn’t itch my ankle the entire rest of the day. Is there anything this stuff doesn’t do? It’s liquid gold.

Most often I use the Rejuveniqe Oil in my hair and on my face as a moisturizer when I don’t need to use my stuff with SPF. Turns out you can use it for far more than that though. After figuring out the mosquito bite itch relief thing, I knew I needed to share it and also start figuring out what other magic this stuff works. Monat actually has a three pager with 101 uses for Rejuveniqe Oil I’d like to share with you.

Maybe I also need to try number 27. New moms go check out number 54. Definitely keeping this in mind for the inevitable number 91.

10 Days of Editing with SMAL Presets

If you missed the announcement, I started a YouTube Channel last week called Monica the MomTog.  So far I've devoted the channel to photo editing and plan to throw in other photography related things as time goes on.

Today marks the start of my first official series of videos on the channel, 10 Days of Editing with SMAL Presets (I am in no way affiliated with the creator of these presets nor have I been asked or paid to use them in these videos).  Each day I'll choose a preset from the pack and edit a photo with it.  At the end of 10 days you'll be able to see how I've used each preset within the pack.  This is great for beginner lightroom users, people on the fence about purchasing these presets, or newbies to the presets who haven't quite figured them out yet.

Please join me over on the Monica the MomTog channel.

Check out the first video in the series below...

Monat Monday: What I Ordered During The Latest Flash Sale

You know it's going to be a good week when your Monat Flash Sale order shows up on a Monday.  Plus I'm having a good hair day thanks to Monat, my coffee was just like I like it this morning and nobody has peed on the floor yet today (that I know of) soooooo... life is good.

So what was the last flash sale and what did I order?  The flash sale was buy a system (including the Junior line) and create your own travel size system for $10.  In addition to that you also got a sample of the color enhance duo FOR FREE.

Oh and did I mention FREE SHIPPING?  Amazon Prime has made me a sucker for free shipping.

This came just in time because it's been 10 months ish since our first order of the Monat Junior line and we're just about out.  This means one of two things.  I either don't wash my kids' hair enough or this stuff lasts forever.  Maybe it's a combo of both.

No matter what, I always get a little excited when one of these boxes shows up on my doorstep.

So everything you see below cost me $51 + tax with my Market Partner discount.  That discount is a huge part of why I signed up to be a Market Partner.  The Junior Line is regularly $59, VIP Price is $50, and as a Market Partner I pay $41.

What We Love About the Monat Junior Line

  • It's tear-free, sulfate-free, and paragon-free
  • a child's hair is more fragile and fine and the Junior Line was formulated with that in mind
  • It comes with conditioner!!!  My daughter has long hair that she almost never wants to wear up and she certainly doesn't want to cut it.  Trying to brush that out after shampooing with children's shampoo that was not Monat was total agony.  Having a children's conditioner is saving time, hair from being damaged, and maybe our relationship as mother and daughter.  Okay that's maybe a little dramatic, but you get the point.  The experience brushing her hair after a bath with Monat is night and day from what it used to be.

This Stuff only Cost me $10

What is it about travel size stuff that gets me excited?  I don't even travel that much and when I do it's typically not on a plane.  Have you ever seen a dry shampoo so cute in all your life?

I'm thinking that dry shampoo might just go in my purse.  I feel like you never know when you might need some dry shampoo.

I'm also just excited to try the Colour Enhance duo.  I'm a brunette, but I ordered the Brilliant Blonde because I have blonde-ish highlights.  I've heard other say it really makes them stand out and I wanted to give it a try.

Monat is really expanding their selection of hair products.  It can be a little overwhelming if you don't know where to start.  Take the Hair Quiz to find out which products are right for your hair needs.  Visit my website to make your purchase or learn more about the products.

ThermaLeaf® Fire Retardant Artificial Foilage Review

The awesome people over at ThermaLeaf® sent me this Bird's Nest Fern last week and I'm pretty excited about it.  I haven't really decided on it's final resting place in the house just yet and I'm thinking I need a plant stand that's a bit more elevated because that stool belongs to my kids and they're not going to let me use it forever.

This plant is fire retardant artificial foilage which is pretty cool.  I love me some real plants, don't get me wrong, but I have my fair share of artificial around the house too.  Truth be told, when I went to set up this quick little shoot for this plant, I had to move some things out of the way, one of which was a plant I probably hadn't watered in three weeks and it really needed some tlc asap. Sometimes I just forget because life is busy.

ThermaLeaf-8737.jpg
ThermaLeaf-8784.jpg

So obviously PRO # 1 is that I can't kill this thing.  I love never having to water which is the only reason my cacti are currently surviving in my bathroom.  Apparently the humidity from our shower is enough to keep them alive.  So yeah, I love that I get the appeal of a plant without having to remember to water it.

PRO #2 is that it's fire retardant.  Look, nobody plans on needing things to be fire retardant, but I have a toddler boy and I'm sure there is a reason their pajamas are fire redardant.

PRO # 3 is that I love the base on this thing.  It came with a black planter pot and I stole the terra-cotta from another plant of mine.  But what I love about it is the base is heavy and details didn't get skipped over.  I was afraid that my kids or the dog would be knocking this over on the regular, but that heavy base should keep it in place and make that more of a challenge.  The folks at ThermaLeaf® actually tried to make the soil look real by adding some natural looking elements.  I appreciate that.  I also just love the base of the stems and the attention to detail there.

PRO # 4 is this thing seems like it'll be easy to wipe down.   I feel like sometimes you can buy artificial foliage that is basically impossible to clean so I'm happy this looks so easy.  Housekeeping isn't exactly my favorite activity.

PRO #5 is that it looks good in my house.  There is just something about plants that adds life to a home and seeing them just makes me happy and just overall improves my mood.  This one reminds me of the beach or somewhere tropical, which is totally my happy place.

ThermaLeaf-8780.jpg

My single CON is that it isn't real.  In a perfect world I'd have all the real plants and someone to make sure I didn't kill them, but that's just not realistic in a lot of situations.  Worry free artificial plants definitley have their place.

If you want to learn more about ThermaLeaf® fire retardant artificial foilage, visit their website at http://www.thermaleaf.com/

ThermaLeaf® provided me with a coupon code to share with you that can be used at www.silkplantsdirect.com.  That code is BLOGGER10 and it will get you 10% OFF a non custom order.
